Our School

Oakura School is a vibrant well-resourced school situated 12 km from New Plymouth city in the popular beach location of Oakura. It is a decile 10, full-primary (5-13yr olds) with approximately 300 pupils spread across thirteen classrooms. The majority of the children live in Oakura Village with a few children travelling from rural areas by bus.

“The positive, caring learning environment is a distinctive feature of the school…Students feel valued, confidently share ideas and strategies and take risks in their learning…Teachers’ knowledge of student achievement information and interests influences teaching programmes that motivate and challenge…Students feel emotionally safe and supported to learn as a result of peer and teacher actions.” (ERO, 2011)

Academically our pupils achieve to a high standard with the help and support of families who value education and are committed to supporting the best possible opportunities for their children. Data shows that the majority of students perform at or above nationally expected levels in numeracy, reading and writing.

School programmes are closely related to the environment of the Oakura community, with the beach and the mountain being a major focus. Our pupils proudly take part in many environmental projects within our community ie beach clean up day, spinifex planting on the beach, planting in native bush areas, penguin box building and monitoring, vegetable gardens, planting and nurturing native plants in our plant propagation unit.

Our students have an active lifestyle. Many students are fully involved in skiing and water sports such as surf life saving, body boarding and surfing. Most of the children are members of the school-based Oakura Junior Sports Club. This club offers a wide range of sports including cricket, soccer, netball, basketball, mini-ball and tennis. There is also a dance school, karate club, pony club and rugby club operating in the district to which a number of our pupils belong.

Oakura School plays a significant role in providing a social meeting place and community facilities such as the School/Community Library, the tennis courts and Plunket rooms.
